Jobs, skills and progress

There is an old saying, if you need a job, you need experience, and, if you need experience you need job. Catch 22, many call it.

Many years ago, trades were learnet under a master craftsman. That was kind of Guru and deciple situation. Here one worked as an unpaid assistant, and get to see what the the master did. Just seeing the thing, not doing the thing. Soon some small assignment will be given to intern ( student ) and after many years of slog, the student will know how to actually perfom the job his master does.

Some Government ask trade and industry to take vacation trainees. In many places, such trainees are considered to be headache and offices just tolerate them.

Infosys is a company which perhaps has some 50,000 souls in its rolls. What do they do, they acually go to schools and pick bright youngsters and book and hook them with job offers. Some school leavers accept these jobs. What Infosys gets here is not skills but bright brains. These youngsters are trained to do specified jobs.

Small businesses cannot keep inhouse trainers, so they outsource training. Training businesses, now come up with programmes to teach welding, airhostessing, lift engineering, firefighting and so on. Skills are needed, but how to acquire them is the problem.

This is how Mathew PV became a Chef in Sheraton, Dubai.

Many years ago, Mahtew met his neighbour, who was on leave from Delhi. Chandran had found a job in Oberoi Intercontiental, through his brother who was already employed in Oberoi.

Mathew was taken in as a trainee in the cold meat department (garde manger)
After two years there, he was interviewed by a hotel chain in the Gulft.

End story of how mathew became a sous chef in Sheraton Garde manger.

Monsoon Kerala 2009

Monsoon is officially in.

Today, the first of June 2009, the day stayed almost bright and sunny. Suddenly it darkened at around 5 and then, wham, it rained. Only for a shortwhile, and helped to wet clothes and things, (A MATTRESS FOR ME).

It might rain again tonight, after all, it is the season.

Today, the 10th of June, it is not very cloudy, it is 4 pm now, the rains stayed away. Yes it is bettter to rain only at night (wishful thinking?)

Kerala weather as people see it

Hari came from Muscat two weeks ago, is very aware of climate change. He, said that two weeks ago it was raining in Muscat. Do April showers bring May flowers?

For last two days it did rain in Cochin, high winds caused losses of property, like a Chinese net at Fortcochin get broken in the wind, and several trees getting uprooted. Yesterdays rain, as well as on day before yesterday, started at 5.30 in the evening and was preceeded by lightning and thunder. The rains stayed on for only an hour, cooled the atmosphere quite a bit.

Crop damage is reported from many places, pity the farmers who were getting ready for a harvest of whatever they planted.

Meanwhile, as news of global warming spread, people are aware and notice that temporatures have gone up even in Wayanad.

For last four months Kerala was under dry spell.

Today, the 13th April 2009, the satellite photographs show clouds on kerala map, so it is expected to rain. Last week, it did rain on alternate days for an hour or so, in the evening, so one needs not water the plants in pots around the house and on roof top.

Ah, ha, my reihan, sort of basil from Muscat looks pale inspite of rain, looks like it is in a pot with roots only.

The weather man said that, officially, it was rainy season from 27the May 2009. However the monsoon started two days early. It is not that non stop downpour, but just enough to keep us drenched and keep clothes indoors for drying rather than hanging them out in the sun for dryintg.

Today is the 27th October 2009. Warm day, it is cloudy, but no sign of rain. Intermittant rains are expected to cool the air, but nothing happening so far.

Thulavarsham, or rather the rains in the month of Thulam (mid Oct) started in Novemeber this year (2009).
